#199 Aldie Castle
East of Crook of Devon
Kinross-shire, Scotland
Late 15th or early 16th century plus later
This is NOT an official Lego site

Aldie Castle is built on land that was first known to be owned by the Earls of Strathearn from the 1160s. Then in 1362 King David II confirmed a grant from the Earl of Fife to Walter Murray of Tullibardine which included the lands of Aldie. About the same time John Mercer, a burgess from nearby Perth, married one of Walter's daughters and the lands of Aldie were included in the dower.  The Mercer family held the lands for more than 400 years, the built the current castle, but by 1799 the castle was abandoned and becoming derelict.  Thereafter the lands and ruin passed to the Nairn family and by marriage on the the Lansdowne family. Aldie Castle was built in the early 16th century.  Later in that century the two story Kitchen Wing was added in the southeast corner, and in the 17th century the three story Residential Wing was added parallel to the keep.  The original entrance at the southeast corner also featured the main circular stair, topped by a small caphouse.  The castle was restored in the 1950s, and is currently owned by the Kinloch family.

On September 8 the tower house
is outlined on a 64 by 72 stud grid.
By the next day landscaping is complete
and the castle is fully outlined.
A miniscule courtyard separates the
original keep from the two later
additions.
On September 11 the future
planting areas are defined...
...and the five doors into the
trio of buildings are in place.
Here's the view from the southwest
with the kitchen building on the right.
The southeast view highlights
both later additions.
On September 13 the ground
floor level is complete.
The old keep is windowless...
...with the exception on the
SW end, added later in the
sixteenth century.
The additions, however,
feature several windows.
On September 14 the second
addition is through the 2nd floor...
...and the main block is
well into the first.
The first addition, just two
stories, is completely roofed.
Here's the additions from
the southeast.
And two views of...

...the tiny courtyard.
On September 15 a third
story is added.
The tower is looking a
bit for formidable...
...and both additions are
now complete and roofed.

Its beginning to look like
a really nice place to live.
Here's a detail of the dormers...
...and the bases of the corner
turrets.
